Heart Breaks Without a Trace — A Song, A Tape, A Time Machine

Image
There’s something about old songs that don’t just play… they open doors. I just recorded a music video performing 《心碎了无痕》 (Heart Breaks Without a Trace), a timeless Mandarin love ballad by the legendary Jacky Cheung. But the story of why this song matters to me goes somewhere deeper than just melody. 🎞️ The Cassette Tape That Time Forgot Somewhere in my treasured old things sits a weird little artifact — a cassette tape. That odd throwback tech that most people under 30 don’t even recognize anymore. On it, scratched recordings from 1995–96… me and my best friends, singing karaoke, off-key and all in. We were teenagers full of earnest feelings and loud dreams. Sing songs, nay-nay, we roared songs. One of those voices belongs to my best friend Mike — a brother in harmony and chaos — who loved Jacky’s music. This song was one of his favorites. Back then, we didn’t understand heartbreak. We only knew longing: intense, dramatic, and beautiful in its innocence. Singi...

Desperado (Or: The Time I “Discovered” the Eagles and Got Publicly Dragged for It)

Image
I just recorded myself singing “Desperado” by the Eagles, and before anyone starts typing “Johnny, that song is ancient”— YES. I KNOW. Trust me. I learned that lesson the hard way. See, there’s this dangerous little phenomenon where something is new to you, so your brain confidently decides it must be new to everyone. This story is Exhibit A of why that thinking is a trap. Growing up in Taiwan, regular kids like me had zero exposure to the Eagles. Classic Western rock just wasn’t part of the soundtrack of our lives. Sure, my parents—who owned nightclubs and booked entertainers—knew who the Eagles were… but that knowledge never filtered down to the kids running around clueless and innocent. Fast-forward to me at 14, freshly immigrated to Canada, still trying to figure out everything. One day, my best friend—also from Taiwan—comes at me with the energy of someone who has just uncovered buried treasure. “HOLY SH*T. Have you heard of this NEW band called the E...

When the Applause Rises

Image
There are some songs you don’t just perform. You survive them. 掌聲響起 is one of those songs for me. Every time I hear the opening lines — standing alone on a stage, listening to the applause — my chest tightens. Not because of nerves, but because of memory. This song isn’t about fame. It’s about endurance. About what it costs to stay standing long enough for the applause to come. Image: Sparring-Johnny, wearing black gloves and shirt, stands with eyes closed, concentrating. Two men in the background practice boxing in a gym setting. [ ] As a blind and partially deaf musician, a martial arts champion, an athlete, and now a professional artist sharing work on the world stage, applause has never been something I expected. It’s something that arrived only after countless failures, endless waiting, and years of telling myself one simple thing: 忍耐 — endure. When the crowd claps, the words that echo in my mind are always the same: 經過多少失敗,經過多少等待,告訴自己要忍耐 How many failure...
