True martial arts—complete martial arts—are built on three timeless foundations: 演 (Performance), 練 (Conditioning), and 打 (Combat). Without understanding and developing all three, your training will be lopsided, fragile, and ultimately incomplete. An old proverb captures this perfectly: 練功不練拳,猶如無舵之船;練拳不練功,到老一場空。 To train the body but not the art is to sail a rudderless boat.
