Ubereats, Temptation & The Tale of One Blind Man’s Cravings - Blessing? Curse? Or a delicious test of self-control?

There was a time—feels like another life—when the only food delivery available was from the dingy local Chinese joint down the block. You know the one. Food? Meh. Service? Worse. But if you didn’t want pizza, that was it. That was the reality of food delivery as recently as 2019.

Now imagine being blind. You’ve got a craving for donuts. Or a juicy, dripping cheeseburger. But you can’t just hop in the car or stroll to the corner deli. Accessibility becomes a battlefield. And then... along came Ubereats. SkipTheDishes. DoorDash. And suddenly—hundreds of restaurants, right at my fingertips?

Holy shit, I thought I’d died and gone to heaven.

But like any sweet fantasy, there was a dark side.

When COVID hit and lockdown became life, I lost my ability to grocery shop. No one would help. I couldn’t understand anyone through those damn masks, and they couldn’t understand me either. No groceries meant no home-cooked meals. So I said, “Screw it.” Thank the gods for Ubereats.

I went from occasional orders to three meals a day, all delivered, all different places. It was indulgence on steroids.

And then came the crash.

Within a month, I was bored out of my mind. It started taking longer and longer to pick what I wanted. Nothing sounded good. I’d scroll for hours like I was channel surfing food, overwhelmed by choices that all felt the same. The joy was gone. The thrill? Dead.

Worse, I was spiraling into debt—over $3000 on my credit card, and no income in sight since the pandemic wiped out my counseling work. Government aid? Delayed. Hope? Slim.

I won’t drag you through all of the dark details (those of us who survived the pandemic era all have battle scars), but here’s the truth I learned:

Too much of a good thing tastes like ash.

These days, I rarely use delivery. Maybe once a week. Twice, if work’s nuts. But I’ve learned the art of restraint. I let the cravings build. And when that Ubereats bag finally hits my doorstep? The food tastes divine. Better than ever. Every time.

So if you find yourself endlessly scrolling through delivery apps, unable to choose anything because nothing excites you—put it down. Step away. Give it a week. Maybe two. Let your hunger earn its indulgence again.

Your wallet will thank you.
Your stomach will dance.
Your joy in food will return.

And yes… the same principle applies to sex and masturbation.
But that’s a post for another day. 😉
