What Martial Art is Good for You? (Based on Your Chinese Zodiac)

One of the questions I’ve been asked my whole life—seriously, like every other week—is:

"Hey Johnny, what martial art should I learn?"

And the truth is... I can’t really tell you.

Not without training with you for a few months. I need to know:
Are you quick on your feet? Aggressive or more defensive? Do you prefer to stay grounded or take flight? How’s your timing? Balance? Are you scrappy or strategic?

There’s no one-size-fits-all. Sure, I could say something generalized like:
“You’re a girl? Try Taekwondo.”
“You’re a big guy? Go with boxing.”

But that’s lazy stereotyping, and I like to work harder than that—for myself and my students.

So instead, let’s do something fun. Let’s match you up based on your Chinese Zodiac sign.

Each sign has its own personality quirks, habits, and let’s be honest, vices. Why not use that to inspire your fighting style?

Let’s dive in…

🐀 Rat – Jeet Kune Do

Image: Mickey Mouse, dressed in a white karate uniform with a black belt, crouches in a fighting stance. Behind him, several defeated martial artists lie on the ground in an outdoor dojo setting.

[

]

Quick-thinking, adaptive, clever and slippery. You’ll love Bruce Lee’s philosophy of “using no way as way.” Fast hands, sharp reflexes, dirty tricks? Right up your alley.

🐂 Ox – Judo

Image: Two anthropomorphic bulls in white martial arts uniforms and black belts are grappling on a grassy field. The larger bull stands dominant, pinning the other bull, who wears a red headband, to the ground.

[

]

Strong, grounded, and stubborn. You don’t move fast—but you don’t need to. You move when you’re ready, and when you do, someone’s flying. Judo’s throws and pins suit your enduring, steady nature.

🐅 Tiger – Tiger Style Kung Fu

Image: A muscular, anthropomorphic female tiger in a gym tears a tiger-striped punching bag with her sharp claws. She has orange and black fur, a fierce expression, and a powerful, athletic build.

[

]

Fierce, impulsive, dominant. You want to hunt. You need raw, explosive power and fearlessness. Tiger Style Kung Fu or Muay Thai lets you rip into opponents with strength, rhythm and primal presence.

🐇 Rabbit – Aikido

Image: A humanoid rabbit in a martial arts gi applies an armlock to a man in a dojo, surrounded by glowing, blue, star-filled humanoid figures, creating a surreal, mystical atmosphere.

[

]

Graceful, sensitive, peace-loving—but don’t be fooled. You’ll deflect an attack like wind through trees, using redirection and control. Aikido’s smooth, circular motions appeal to your artistic and serene vibe.

🐉 Dragon – Kung Fu / Mixed Martial Arts

Image: A golden Chinese dragon in a red and gold martial arts robe leaps in an alley, wielding nunchucks. Shadowy figures with staffs approach, with traditional Chinese buildings visible in the background.

[

]

Charismatic, intense, full of flair. You want flash and effectiveness. Kung Fu for the style and storytelling, MMA for the glory and adaptability. You breathe fire, so burn bright.

🐍 Snake – Tai Chi or Baguazhang

Image: A person in white martial arts attire with a cobra’s head performs tai chi, surrounded by a glowing, colorful energy ring. Onlookers watch in a park with lanterns hanging above.

[

]

Sly, elegant, strategic. You don’t rush—because you’re always five steps ahead. Tai Chi gives you hidden power and flow. Baguazhang gives you deceptive footwork and coiling grace. Both are dangerous when mastered.

🐎 Horse – Capoeira or Kickboxing

Image: A muscular human body with a horse’s head performs a dynamic capoeira kick on a city street. Behind, a car crashes and an explosion erupts, creating a dramatic, action-packed scene.

[

]

Energetic, wild, social. You crave motion and fun. Capoeira blends movement, music and martial arts. Kickboxing gives you rhythm and sweat. Either way, your legs will do the talking.

🐐 Goat – Wing Chun

Image: A muscular humanoid goat in black martial arts pants and belt stands in a dojo, surrounded by shattered objects on the floor. Wooden training dummies line the background, sunlight streaming in.

[

]

Calm, inward, precise. You don’t like brute force, and that’s fine. Wing Chun is about control, structure, and smart strikes. Get in close, and they’ll never see what hit ‘em.

🐒 Monkey – Monkey Style Kung Fu (yes, it’s real)

Image: A monkey in ornate turquoise attire leaps midair, surrounded by two expressive men and another monkey in martial arts uniforms, set against a backdrop of traditional Chinese architecture and blossoming trees.

[

]

Mischievous, fast, cheeky. You want to play and win. Monkey Style Kung Fu has flips, tumbles, slaps, and tricks. It’s unorthodox and clever—just like you.

🐓 Rooster – Muay Thai

Image: A muscular figure with a rooster’s head, tail, and feet, wearing red Muay Thai boxing gear, performs a high kick outdoors among palm trees at sunset. The scene is surreal and humorous.

[

]

Cocky, loud, aggressive—and proud of it. You walk into the ring already believing you’ve won. Muay Thai’s brutal elbows and knees give you the swagger and viciousness you crave.

🐕 Dog – Krav Maga

Image: A police officer with a German Shepherd’s head stands triumphantly over a subdued man reaching for a gun. The surreal, night-time street scene features two handguns on the ground, dramatic lighting.

[

]

Loyal, protective, and alert. You fight to protect. You don’t care for showy moves—you want results. Krav Maga’s no-nonsense, real-world approach is ideal. Hurt them before they hurt your pack.

🐖 Pig – Gun-Fu (Yes, we’re going there)

Image: A pig-headed humanoid in black tactical police gear holds two pistols, surrounded by armed officers in an urban alley. The scene is intense, surreal, and action-packed, blending humor and drama.

[

]

Let’s be real—you’re chill, indulgent, and not here for a workout. You want to win without breaking a sweat. So screw martial arts—get a Glock and practice Gun-Fu. Or hey, do Filipino Kali so you can sit, drink, and still slice someone’s wrist if needed. No judgment.

Final Thoughts:

This guide is just for laughs—but maybe, just maybe, it hits close to home. Truth is, finding your martial art is like dating—it takes some trial and error. You might not find “the one” on the first try. That’s okay. Try everything. Spar, fall, get up, try again. Martial arts is a journey of self-discovery, and just like in life, the path is yours to walk.

Or punch through.
