💥ACTASITEMS Training Katana Review: Plastic, Practical, and Surprisingly Fun

Every year, I spice up the arsenal at Night Strike Self Defense with a few fresh blades. Let’s face it—whether you’re blind, sighted, or somewhere in between, the same tired knives and swords get boring fast. With more students walking through our doors (and swinging sharp-ish things), it's only right we expand the collection.

So for 2025, I added a pair of ACTASITEMS Plastic Sword-Sujiaojian to our training gear. Yeah, ACTASITEMS—as in, Act As Items. And the model name? Sujiaojian—literally Mandarin for “Plastic Sword.” Gotta love that blunt-force marketing charm from overseas sellers.

🥷 Real Talk – My First Impressions

Let’s not beat around the bokken—these are not high-end martial arts tools. They’re budget blades. But baby, they deliver way more than their price tag suggests.

Image: Two black katana swords lying parallel on a textured red foam mat. Both have crisscross-wrapped handles and glossy black sheaths. They are illuminated by a purple LED light, emphasizing their details.

These swords are:

  • Durable: I tested them with light solo drills and impact against a dummy—no warping, no cracks, no problem.

  • Safe-ish: Not sharp, but that point is a little too... pointy, especially in sparring. Blind or not, you’ll feel it.

  • Portable: The lightweight design and included saya (sheath) make them perfect for on-the-go drills.

Image: A person with long black hair and a dark coat stands in a cluttered room, holding a black katana. Martial arts gear, swords, a punching bag, and various equipment fill the space.

They’re a little lighter and shorter than a real katana—think fun-sized. The curvature’s off too, giving them more of a ninjato vibe than a proper katana arc. And the suba (guard) is laughably tiny, almost nonexistent—reminds me more of a shirasaya than anything else.

Image: The person now grips the black katana with both hands, holding it vertically in front of their body. Their eyes are closed and their expression is serious, suggesting concentration or focus.

But here’s the kicker: they’re fun as hell.
The blade’s textured along the spine, so when you draw it from the sheath it makes this badass rasping movie-sound effect. You know I stood there like a dork drawing and resheathing it for ten minutes straight, grinning like a fanboy. Geek points: 100.

Image; The person, seen from behind, raises the black katana high above their head with one hand, while holding the sheath in the other. Their stance suggests a dramatic or action-ready pose.

🔥 Final Thoughts

Is this the most accurate katana replica you’ll ever find? Nope.
Is it going to impress traditionalists? Also no.
But will it get your heart pumping, your imagination going, and your students smiling while still being safe and affordable?

Hell yes.

For $39 CAD, you're getting a durable, sheath-included, sparring-friendly sword that makes you feel like a damn movie hero. Whether you’re teaching blind swordplay like I do or just need a few extra blades for backyard chaos, these are a win.
