To the Dad We All Deserved – A Father's Day Salute to Rob Kenney
This Father’s Day, I want to shine a light on someone who’s been quietly changing lives—one YouTube video at a time. His name is Rob Kenney, and if you’ve ever felt lost trying to learn how to tie a tie, unclog a sink, or just needed to hear a father’s voice telling you “I’m proud of you,” then his channel Dad, How Do I? might just bring a tear to your eye.
Rob started his channel in 2020 with a simple mission: to be the dad he never had. And now, with over 4.5 million subscribers and counting, he’s the dad we never had, too.
See, I’ve got a complicated relationship with my own father. He was plenty willing to guide me… as long as it meant me doing exactly what he said—no questions asked. And if I did question? Let’s just say guidance came with yelling, fists, feet, and airborne furniture. So yeah, that didn’t exactly work out.
That’s why what Rob does hits me so deep. I’m usually skeptical of so-called “inspirational content”—too many so-called heroes end up with feet of clay. But Rob? What he does reminds me of what I try to do through my own platforms: just give. Give time, knowledge, kindness. Make the world a little brighter. Help one more person feel less alone. Whether through art, words, self-defense, or sass—I give what I can, hoping it reaches someone who needs it.

So this weekend, let’s celebrate not just the dads we were born to—but the ones we choose. The ones who show up. The ones who teach with patience and love, who lead with heart instead of ego.
Here’s to you, Rob Kenney. Thank you for showing up for so many of us.
