One More Mountain to Climb – A Song That Refused to Let Me Go

Some songs are just songs.

Others become part of your survival instinct.

Back in 2006, I heard a song called One More Mountain to Climb by Neil Sedaka. At the time, I didn’t know much about the song’s history. I only knew how it made me feel.

For years and years afterward, whenever life got emotionally heavy… whenever I was exhausted, frustrated, heartbroken, or pushing myself on the treadmill to the point where I felt like quitting… this was the song that started playing in my head.

“One more mountain to climb… one more river to cross…”

It became this strange little anthem of endurance for me.

And here’s the crazy part: for the longest time, I couldn’t find the song anywhere. Not the lyrics. Not the recording. Nothing. I searched over and over again through the years, and Google acted like the song never existed. It honestly started to feel like something I dreamed up in my own mind.

Then finally, in 2026, after what felt like the hundredth search attempt… it appeared.

Like the universe finally decided:
“Alright. Here you go. It’s time.”

So I knew I had to cover it.

What makes this song fascinating is that it’s very different from the upbeat pop sound most people associate with Neil Sedaka. Released during a more introspective period of his career on the Emergence album in 1970, the song carries a deeply spiritual and emotional tone. Written with longtime collaborator Howard Greenfield, it feels less like a radio single and more like a weary prayer from someone struggling to keep moving forward.

Ironically, the song became more successful through cover versions than Sedaka’s own original recording. Canadian band Dr. Music had a notable hit with it in 1971, and other artists covered it over the years as well.

But despite never becoming a massive mainstream classic, the song has quietly endured because the message is timeless:
keep going.

Even when you’re tired.
Even when you’re hurting.
Even when you think you’ve got nothing left.

There’s still one more mountain to climb.
